What are Orthotics?
Orthotics look very much like insoles but they are in fact medical devices, a bit like prescription glasses, that help to improve the mechanics of tissues and joints in your feet.
Custom Orthotics can help to:
- Correct imbalance in the unique movement patterns of your feet
- Reduce pain in the feet and other areas of stress and strain in the body.
What Are Orthotics Used For?
Orthotics are used to address all types of foot injuries including:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel Pain
- Pain in the Ball of The Foot
- Fallen Arches
- Heel Spurs
- Walking / Gait Problems
Orthotics can be used to address injuries in the ankle joint and tissues around it such as:
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Ankle Hypermobility
- Ligament Strains
Back and Knee Pain
Orthotics help to correct imbalances in the movement patterns of the feet.
Correction of these imbalances can help to improve the function of other areas in the body, particularly the knee joints and the lower back.
The improvement in foot movement and the cushioning and support that orthotics provide can help to offload other joints.
This can make a big difference if you are struggling with knee or hip arthritis, making walking easier and less painful.
The Harpenden Orthotic Therapy Program
Our Knowledgeable and Experienced Team at Harpenden Sports and Spinal Have Helped 1000s of People Just Like You Using Our 3 Step Program
Step 1 : Examination and Gait Assessment
During the comprehensive gait assessment, your practitioner will perform an examination of your feet and ankles and the way you walk.
This allows for an overview of the alignment, movement and muscle function of the lower limbs, taking into account your specific circumstances and history.
This information also indicates whether you will benefit from a custom orthotic or not.
Step 2 - Hands On Treatment
Our knowledgable and experienced therapists will carry out a treatment plan tailored to your specific circumstances, injury and goals.
Our committed team use a very much hands on treatment approach to get you out of pain and back on the road to recovery.
Unlike many clinics, here at Harpenden Sports and Spinal, we always begin with hands-on treatment to reduce tissue tension and prepare your joints for orthotics.
Step 2: GaitScan™ Computerized Analysis
Here at Harpenden Sports and Spinal, we use the latest technology, to conduct a highly accurate scan of your gait (the way you walk).
As you walk across the GaitScanTM pressure plate, over one million data points are collected. This data provides an enormous amount of detailed information into the unique timing and pressure of your gait, that cannot be seen with the naked eye. This information also indicates whether you will benefit from a custom orthotic or not.
This data also creates a dynamic cast of each foot and eliminates the need for plaster or foam casting if an orthotic is required.
Here at Harpenden Sports and Spinal, we have invested in the latest orthotics technology to get the best result for our patients.
If appropriate we may advise you to go ahead with custom orthotics. We use highly accurate TOG (OHI) customised orthotics, which provide:
- the perfect fit
- superior comfort.

Much Kinder to the Environment
Current machine production of orthotics creates a huge proportion of waste materials, costing huge amount of labor and transportation to recycle.
Our heated molded orthotics are made in clinic and not imported from overseas labs. The result? An enormous reduction in waste materials and zero transportation.
We are proud to use technology so impactful on environmental waste reduction and sustainability.
