Are you weighing up your options for the best treatment for your herniated (bulging/slipped) disc? You want to stay away from surgery/injections?
You’re in the right place! I've put together some practical advice and options as you work out what your next right step and my aim is to give you an informed choice

Think of a disc like a water balloon or even a car tyre. When pressure drops inside the disc, it can bulge into the space where sensitive spinal nerves run. That’s why you might feel sharp back/leg pain, tingling, pins and needles, burning, or even a loss of strength.
I'd think of what to do in two phases:
Keep gently active -avoid too much bed rest. Switch positions often: a little lying, a little sitting, short walks (all within pain tolerance).
Don’t overdo it (you're injured!)- skip hard gym sessions and deep stretches while it’s angry.
Short-term medication (via your GP/pharmacist) can help you sleep and take the edge off the pain.
A lumbar support belt can help when you’re out and about (not for rest).
Gentle hands-on support (physio/osteopathy/chiropractic/massage/acupuncture) can calm tissues and guide you.
If you improve with this alone, great news your body has healed itself. However, many people don't and will need some extra help.
Past ~4 weeks or if you’re losing power its time to get a clear diagnosis.
An MRI tells us exactly which level is involved so we can plan precisely. I can organise one for you using our rapid referral MRI - current price is £295 - this comes back to us in usually less than a -1week.
If you’d like to stay non-invasive (and avoid injections or surgery), there is another option which you may not of heard of - IDD Therapy. IDD Therapy Intervertebral Disc Decompression is for appropriate disc problems confirmed on MRI.
How it works (in simple terms):
Targeted decompression: You lie comfortably supported while a computer-controlled table gently stretches the exact spinal level shown on your MRI, easing pressure off the nerve so it can settle.
Oscillation (“a gentle wiggle”): The system adds a precise wiggle at the target level, helping fluid and nutrients flow back into the disc - like pumping up a tyre.
Space to heal: With pressure reduced and fluids moving, bulging material can be re-absorbed, nerve irritation calms, and your spine can move more naturally again.
It’s non-surgical, drug-free, and delivered as a course of sessions because discs and nerves heal gradually, not overnight. In our clinic we see strong effectiveness (85% success rate), and it can be a helpful way to avoid injections or surgery. More information on IDD Therapy
In short: decompress the level, re-hydrate the disc, calm the nerve - safely and comfortably.
Spinal injections can calm inflammation so you can progress rehab, but they don’t fix the disc itself; results vary from person to person.
Surgery (e.g., discectomy/decompression) is usually a last resort. If your case needs a surgical opinion, I'll say so.
Calm the flare: pace activity, optimise sleep, gentle movement.
Get clarity: if it persists, arrange an MRI and a spine-aware assessment. More information on IDD therapy
Choose the least-invasive effective option: consider IDD Therapy if suitable; add progressive rehab.
